We're Going to England! 2006 Hildreth Family Reunion

See where our ancestors lived, worked, and played in the 1500’s and 1600’s. Learn more about our heritage. The next trip to England will be 10 or more years from now. Hence, maybe “it’s later than you think” and maybe “it’s now or never.”

The first part of the main excursion will visit the sights that are extremely important to our Hildreth heritage, including York, Durham, Gainford, Hartlepool and Whitby. The second part of the main excursion will tour scenic London and environs. The third part is an optional extension to Stonehenge, Salisbury Cathedral, Bath, the Cotwolds, Blenheim Palace, and Shakespeare’s Stratford-upon-Avon.

TENTATIVE ITINERARY

OCT12 Thu. Leave the USA on a flight which must arrive in Manchester, England, on Friday morning.

OCT13 Fri. Upon arrival at Manchester airport, your full time tour guide, Valerie Williams, and the driver of your tour bus will meet you. Transfer to the historic city of York, which is renowned for its Roman and Viking links. After checking in your hotel, there will be free time for independent sightseeing. Overnight in York.

OCT14 Sat. Spend the day exploring York. Your guide will lead you on a tour of the quaint sounding streets, such as 'The Shambles' and 'Whip-ma-whop-ma-gate'. You will visit the York Cathedral with its magnificent medieval stained glass. In the afternoon, there will be free time to explore York. Overnight in York.

OCT15 Sun. Depart York and transfer to Gainford parish for the morning service at St Mary's Church where our ancestors prayed. The church existed in the 700’s and was rebuilt in the 1200’s. After the service, we will have the Annual Meeting and lunch at the George pub in the village of Piercebridge, also in Gainford parish, where our ancestors lived and worked in the 1500’s and 1600’s. You will next visit St. Hilda's church in Hartlepool. In this church is St. Hilda’s (St. Hild’s) tombstone with an inscription, which when translated from the Runic language, reads “HILDITHRYTH” which is a form of HILDRETH. She was born in 614 A.D. into the “royal house” of Northumbria and died in 680 A.D. The Hildreth Family Association has adopted St. Hilda (St. Hild) as our Patron Saint. Overnight in Durham.

OCT16 Mon. Today will be spent in Durham reviewing the Hildreth family records from the 1500’s and 1600’s. You will also visit Durham Cathedral. This magnificent Norman cathedral is one of the great architectural experiences in Europe. The rest of the day will be at your leisure to explore the city for yourselves. Overnight in Durham.

OCT17 Tue. Journey today to the remains of Whitby Abbey. Whitby’s cliffs have been sacred since 657 when Hild (Hilda), a most devoted servant of Christ, brought a religious community to settle there. In 664 Hild arranged to have rival parties at the abbey for the Synod of Whitby where it was resolved that the Roman tradition should triumph over Celtic practices. Around 3.00 PM, take the fast train from York to London where a vehicle will meet and take you to your centrally located hotel. Overnight in London.

OCT18 Wed. You will have a ticket to use the “hop-on-hop-off” bus tour of London, one of the greatest cities in the world. This bus will take you to the famous sights, including the Tower of London which was once a prison and which is now a repository for the crown jewels to be viewed by the public, Westminster Abby where the kings and queens are crowned and where many sovereigns are buried, Houses of Parliament having its lofty clock tower with “Big Ben,” Buckingham Palace where the queen has her official residence and where there is a “changing of the guard” ceremony, British Museum with its mummy exhibit, Trafalgar Square with its tall column topped by Lord Nelson’s statue commemorating his victory at Trafalgar, Piccadilly Circus which is really “the crossroads of the world,” and St Paul’s Cathedral noted for its massive size. With commentary along the way, you will be able to disembark as you wish and join a later bus. The ticket, valid for 24 hours, includes a free evening cruise on the Thames. Overnight in London.

OCT19 Thu. You will first visit Windsor Castle today. This castle is one of the largest and oldest occupied castles in the world, and it is one of the official residences of Queen Elizabeth II. The castle's dramatic site encapsulates 900 years of British history. Next we will proceed to Hampton Court, the favorite home of Henry VIII. Enjoy a costume-guided tour of the castle and explore the world famous maze in the beautiful landscaped gardens. In the evening, we will enjoy a unique medieval banquet (extra cost). Overnight in London.

OCT20 Fri. A few of the attendees will transfer to Heathrow airport, but they should make reservations for flights leaving after 12:00 PM. According to your competed survey forms, 90% of us will be on the 3-day optional extension. We begin the extension tour with a visit to the awe-inspiring, pre-historic Stonehenge, one of “wonders of the world.” Then have lunch in nearby Salisbury with a quick look at the Salisbury Cathedral before continuing to Bath. Spend the afternoon exploring this picturesque Georgian city, Visit the Roman Baths, a bathing complex 2000 years old giving the city its name. You will have some free time to shop for souvenirs. Overnight in the Cotswolds.

OCT21 Sat. Spend the morning in Stratford Upon Avon, Shakespeare's birthplace. You will visit some of Shakespeare's houses. Then you have the option to attend a matinee at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre. Overnight in the Cotswolds.

OCT22 Sun. This morning visit Blenheim Palace, the birthplace of Winston Churchill and his ancestors. Later you will visit some of the picturesque Cotswold villages, such as, Chipping Campden and Broadway, where you can stroll around the quaint shops and perhaps take a traditional afternoon tea. Overnight at a Manchester Airport hotel

OCT23 Mon. Use the hotel's free shuttle to Manchester airport where you will fly back during the day to the USA.

Genetics & Genealogy - the Hildreth "DNA Project"
the Hildreth DNA ProjectGenealogy by genetics is the greatest contribution to genealogy since the family tree. Our DNA Project includes the surnames Hildreth, Heldreth, Hildrith & Hyldreth in an effort to determine common ancestry. Join the DNA Project or contact our project administrator for additional information concerning our efforts ... Raymond C. "Bud" Hildreth budhildreth@cox.net

Our DNA Project includes the surnames Hildreth, Heldreth, Hildrith & Hyldreth and has the objectives to: (1.) To determine if Richard Hildreth b. 1605 in England, d. 1688 in Chelmsford, MA and Thomas Hildreth b. unk. in England, and d. 1657 in Southampton, LI, NY are related, and the time to their most recent common ancestor(MRCA). (2) Permit those with the surname Hildreth, or a variation thereof, to ascertain if they are descendants of either Richard or Thomas Hildreth, or if they descend from a Hildreth branch with a common ancestor (CA) perhaps further back in time.

Since a Surname Project in essence traces members of a family that share a common surname, and females (a) don't carry their father's Y-DNA, and (b) acquire a new surname by the way of marriage, in order to be relevant to the Surname Project, the tested individual must be a male that wants to check his paternal line (father's father's father's...). The test to be ordered is either the Y-DNA12, Y-DNA25 or Y-DNA37, and females should look for a brother or cousin with that surname to be tested. Females can also order a test for themselves, which will be the mtDNA or mtDNAPlus, but the results of this test cannot be tied to the Surname Project.
